Antigua

Antigua was our first stop in Guatemala before heading off to other parts of the country. It is a beautiful, colonial city and looking back now I think it must be my favourite city in Guatemala. I love the rustic and colourful walls, the little shops and restaurants and the fact that it is surrounded by green nature on all corners. Far from Manhattan I would say.

Antigua receives a lot of tourist every year, among them many eager and young students of Spanish. When you are in Antigua it is not difficult to know why they end up here. What a magnificent city.

The catedral in Antigua, or to say what is left of it, is worth a visit. You are not in Guatemala, you are in a fairytale castle much like the one in “Pan´s Labyrinth”. Or at least that´s what it feels like.

Afternoon views from Cafe Sky in Antigua, one of the many rooftop bars where you can enjoy a glass of wine and get a great overview of the city.

We had a fun night out there, and believe it or not, we ended the night in a Welsh (?!?) bar drinking Quezalteca, Guatemala´s famous liquor.
